August 11, 2024: my first post: reminiscing.
My first attempts at gardening were when I was in middle school. We had an actual house and 2.5 acres. My mom had had gardens at trailers in the past, but she went all-out here. She gave me a small area to plant some cheap plants she had gotten me- petunias I think, but I had no idea anything about plants at the time so I'm not sure. I don't know if she intended to, but the patch she gave me was really shitty soil, under a huge oak tree that was part of the border around our back yard - so it didn't get much sun, either. Though if they WERE petunias it was probably fine. Anyway, they died. Didn't make it very long. Then, in high school, my mom and dad briefly moved back in together - a very strange experience. They were divorced before I was even concieved. My dad got me a couple of cacti from walmart, and we left them in the tiny original containers. They kept getting knocked over by our cat and eventually died. I was convinced I would never be able to grow anything. In college, in my third year, I had a balcony. So I got some plants. I was an ecology major, so I had a new interest in plants - I'd originally thought I'd only care about the animal classes, and dreaded the plant classes. My first one, dendrology, started off really hard. Then eventually something clicked. That class was more focused on identification and classification, but I took other classes later that added more detail. I got a ton of succulents, mostly from cuttings pilfered from walmart, and I had a cayenne pepper plant. I had a few miscellaneous other plants, but food plants and succulents - particularly cacti - really clicked with me and have lasted the 8 years since :) I'll write more about my gardens since then at a later time. ≽^•⩊•^≼
